The circle got closer, closer, until one of them grabbed a bag. The Duke pulled back weakly. Then the other bag was grabbed, and his arms jerked tight. They had him spread-eagle, yanking him side to side.
A punch to the stomach and he let go.
They grabbed his jacket and pulled it up over his head, covering his eyes, binding his arms. Playing blind-manâs bluff they spun him, punched him, pushed him down then wrenched him up again.
Three of them toyed with their prey while the fourthâthe oldest and the leaderârifled through the bowling bag and The Dukeâs valise.
âLook at this junk.â He held up the doll mirror and the fist-shaped belt buckle, then tossed them both into the dirt. âWe been wastin our time, man. No moola. Guess we outta give it all back.â Now he had The Dukeâs hunting knife in his hand. âKnow what Iâm thinkin? Maybe we give this back⦠sharp end first.â
They laughed, pinning The Duke tight between them.
The boy with the knife moved in.
The thick train window blasted out in one piece, followed by the toilet Lynden had thrown against it with more force than he knew he possessed. He jumped through. Launching himself at the kids. âNo!â he roared and sent them all sprawling in the dirt.
The leader jumped up, knife in hand.
They locked eyes.
Lynden bellowedâa sound that came unbidden and brought with it a rage bottled up for fifteen years.
The leader, terrified by what he saw and heard, withered into a child. He dropped the knife and ranâthe others scurrying after him.
Lynden helped his friend to his feet. âAre you okayâ¦?â he asked and wished he hadnât. He could see plain enough.
The old man wasnât just hurt.
He was defeated.
